Add a Shopify Free Shipping Progress Bar
Learn how to add a Shopify free shipping progress bar, choose a profitable threshold, handle markets correctly and test cart calculations.
Ego Growth Team

A Shopify free shipping progress bar shows customers how close their cart is to a shipping benefit. It can make a threshold easier to understand, but the bar only works when its message, calculation and checkout result agree.
This guide covers both setup and economics, because a beautiful progress bar can still lose money if the threshold is wrong.
How a free shipping progress bar works
The bar compares an eligible cart subtotal with a target. It then shows one of three states:
- Starting: the customer has begun progressing toward the reward.
- Remaining: the cart needs a specific additional amount.
- Unlocked: the cart has met the displayed threshold.
The bar itself does not always create the shipping rate. Your Shopify shipping settings or discount configuration must provide the actual free-shipping outcome.
Step 1: choose a profitable threshold
Begin with current AOV, shipping cost and contribution margin. A useful threshold is usually above the ordinary order value but reachable with a relevant add-on.
Model orders around the proposed threshold:
Contribution = revenue − product cost − discounts − payment fees − fulfillment − shipping subsidy
Check different zones and weight bands. An order that crosses the threshold may also move into a more expensive carrier bracket.
Step 2: create the actual shipping rule
Configure the free-shipping rate or discount in Shopify for the correct markets, zones and minimum order value. Decide whether the minimum uses a subtotal before or after discounts and communicate the same rule in the cart.
Test addresses from every advertised region. Do not show a universal reward if only one market qualifies.
Step 3: add the progress bar to the cart

A cart drawer app can calculate the remaining amount and update the message as quantities change. Ego Cart Drawer includes multi-tier reward-bar functionality, allowing a store to show free shipping and additional rewards within the same cart experience.
Keep the first version simple: one shipping threshold, one message and no competing announcement that uses a different amount.
Step 4: write clear progress messages
Use dynamic, specific copy:
- “Add $18 more to unlock free standard shipping.”
- “You unlocked free standard shipping.”
- “Free shipping applies to eligible domestic orders over $75.”
Avoid saying “free delivery” if the rule only covers standard shipping or excludes certain regions and products.
Step 5: decide which subtotal counts
Document how the bar handles:
- Discount codes and automatic discounts
- Gift cards
- Subscriptions
- Taxes and duties
- Shipping protection or other add-ons
- Excluded products
- Multiple currencies
The progress display should mirror the rule used at checkout. If a discount drops the eligible subtotal below the threshold, the cart must update before the customer leaves the page.
Step 6: test every state
- Empty cart
- Cart below the threshold
- Cart exactly at the threshold
- Cart above the threshold
- Quantity decrease after unlocking
- Discount applied after unlocking
- Out-of-market shipping address
- Mobile cart and express checkout
Add recommendations without clutter
When a customer is close to the threshold, show one or two useful products within the remaining price range. Recommendations should be compatible and easy to add. Do not fill the cart with unrelated products merely to close the gap.
Measure whether the bar is profitable
- Percentage of carts that cross the threshold
- Average order value
- Conversion rate
- Shipping cost per order
- Contribution margin per visitor and order
- Return and cancellation rate
If many existing orders already exceed the threshold, you may be subsidizing behavior that would happen anyway. If few customers get close, the target may be too high or the store may lack relevant add-ons.
Launch a consistent free-shipping experience
First create the real Shopify shipping rule, then display the same eligibility logic in the cart. To add a localized, multi-tier rewards bar with cart recommendations, test Ego Cart Drawer on the Shopify App Store.
Frequently asked questions
Does a progress bar automatically create free shipping?
Not necessarily. The cart UI and the checkout shipping rule are separate layers. Configure and test both.
Should the threshold include tax?
Use the same definition as your shipping rule and state it clearly. Rules can vary by market and configuration.
Can I show different thresholds by country?
Use a cart system that supports localized rules, then verify each threshold against the corresponding Shopify shipping zone and currency.
