How Free Gifts with Purchase Can Lift AOV by 20% or More
Adding a strategic free gift threshold is one of the easiest levers to pull for immediate AOV improvement. Here is how to set it up correctly.

A free gift with purchase on Shopify can encourage customers to add more to their carts, but there is no universal percentage lift. The result depends on the gift, the spending threshold, product margins, placement, and the customers who see the offer. Treat the campaign as a test with a clear profit target, not as a guaranteed shortcut to a 20% increase in average order value.
What the available evidence actually shows
Published examples point in different directions. In one retailer test, a free cleaning product on orders above $299 increased average order value by nearly 15% and conversion rate by nearly 30%. In a separate experiment for Kuddly, a free-gift promotion did not produce a significant improvement in average order value or conversion rate.
This is why a single result should not be presented as a benchmark for every Shopify store. The useful lesson is that free gifts can work when the offer matches the product, customer, and margin structure, but merchants still need to validate the result with their own data.

When a free gift with purchase is likely to work
A campaign has a stronger chance of increasing order value when the next spending milestone feels achievable and the gift is relevant to the products already in the cart. A skincare sample can introduce a complementary product. A travel pouch can complete a beauty set. A replacement filter can make a coffee-machine purchase more useful.
The offer is less likely to help when the threshold is far above normal spending, the gift looks like unwanted stock, or customers cannot see how close they are to qualifying. A campaign can also increase revenue while reducing profit if the discount and fulfillment costs are too high.
Set the threshold from store data, not a generic rule
A fixed recommendation such as “set the threshold 20–25% above average order value” may be a reasonable test idea, but it should not be treated as a rule. Use the following process instead:
Find the baseline. Calculate average order value and median order value for the relevant products, customer segment, and traffic source.
Identify a realistic add-on path. Check which complementary product customers could add to reach the next threshold.
Protect contribution margin. Include the gift cost, picking and packing, additional shipping weight, and the discount cost.
Choose one starting threshold. Avoid launching several overlapping offers before you know which change caused the result.
Compare against a baseline or control. Measure both average order value and conversion rate so a higher cart value does not hide lost orders.
An illustrative margin check
Assume a store has a $65 average order value and tests an $80 free-gift threshold. If a qualifying customer adds $15 of merchandise, the store earns a 60% gross margin on that additional revenue, and the gift costs $4, the incremental contribution before extra fulfillment costs is:
($15 × 60%) − $4 = $5
This is an example, not a promised result. Replace every number with your own product margin, gift cost, and fulfillment cost before launching the campaign.
Choose a gift customers can understand immediately
The best gift is usually relevant, inexpensive for the merchant, and valuable to the customer. Consider:
A sample or mini version that helps customers discover another product
An accessory that completes the main purchase
A limited item that is not normally sold on its own
A choice between two or three gifts when size, color, or preference matters
Avoid gifts with unclear value, poor product ratings, or fulfillment requirements that make the promotion difficult to operate. If the gift has variants, let customers choose the correct option instead of automatically adding an unsuitable item.
Make the offer visible throughout the shopping journey
Customers should understand the qualification rule before reaching checkout. Show the offer on eligible product pages and repeat it in the cart. A progress message such as “Add $12 more to unlock your gift” is more actionable than a banner that only says “Free gift available.”
After qualification, clearly confirm whether the gift was added automatically or whether the customer needs to choose it. Test the full flow on desktop and mobile, including what happens when a customer removes an item and falls below the threshold.
Automate the campaign with a Shopify free gift app

Ego Free Gifts BOGO Upsell is Egohub's tool for running cart-value gifts, quantity-based gifts, Buy X Get Y offers, BOGO campaigns, reward bars, and upsells. Merchants can set eligibility rules, automatically add qualifying gifts or let customers choose, display the offer across storefront widgets, and remove the gift when the cart no longer qualifies.
Start with one campaign and one primary goal. For example, use a cart-value gift to move orders above a profitable threshold, or use Buy X Get Y to promote a complementary product. After activation, test qualifying and non-qualifying carts, discount combinations, out-of-stock gifts, mobile display, and checkout behavior.

If you are comparing tools, Essential Free Gift is another option for Spend X Get Y, BOGO, and Buy X Get Y campaigns. It supports automatic gift addition or customer choice and can display offers on product pages, in the cart or cart drawer, through an announcement bar, or in a floating widget.
Measure profit, not only average order value
Review campaign performance against the period or control group you selected before launch. Track:
Average order value
Conversion rate
Revenue per visitor
Contribution margin per visitor
Percentage of orders that qualify for the gift
Gift cost and additional fulfillment cost
Refund and cancellation rates for qualifying orders
Keep the campaign if it produces more incremental profit without creating operational problems. If average order value rises but conversion or contribution margin falls, test a lower-cost gift, a different threshold, clearer messaging, or a more relevant product pairing.
Free gift with purchase Shopify FAQ
Can a free gift increase Shopify AOV by 20%?
It can happen in an individual campaign, but 20% is not a universal benchmark. Published tests show both positive and neutral results. Use 20% as a hypothesis only if your margin model supports it, then validate the result with store data.
Should the gift be added automatically?
Automatic addition removes friction when there is one simple gift with no variant choice. Let customers choose when the gift has sizes, colors, or several possible rewards.
What should I do if customers do not reach the threshold?
Check whether the threshold is realistic, whether the gift is relevant, and whether the progress message is visible. Change one factor at a time so you can identify what improves the result.
Can a free gift campaign work with other Shopify discounts?
It can, but the outcome depends on the app settings and Shopify discount-combination rules. Test the exact discount codes, automatic discounts, shipping offers, and gift conditions that customers will use before publishing the campaign.
