How to Create and Use Segments

Learn how to create and manage customer segments based on attributes and behaviors. Use segments to target the right audience for push notifications and marketing campaigns.

Overview

A Segment is a group of app users who match selected conditions.

Use segments to send notifications to a more relevant audience instead of targeting every app user. You can create segments based on customer information, shopping activity, location, purchase history, and app engagement.

For example, you can target:

  • Customers in a specific country

  • Users who have not opened the app recently

  • Customers who added products to their cart

  • New users

  • Returning customers

  • Customers who previously viewed a notification

Step 1: Create a segment

  1. Open Ego Mobile Builder.

  2. Go to Notifications → Segments.

  3. Click Create segment.

  4. Enter a clear segment name.

Use a name that helps you quickly understand the audience, such as:

  • Inactive users — 30 days

  • Customers in the United States

  • New users — last 7 days

  • Added to cart but not purchased

Step 2: Choose how conditions are matched

Under the segment name, select how subscribers should match the conditions.

All conditions

Users must meet every condition added to the segment.

Example:

  • Location Country equals United States

  • Last session date is before the selected date

Only users who meet both conditions are included.

Any condition

Users only need to meet one of the added conditions.

Example:

  • Added to cart

  • Added to wishlist

Users who performed either action can be included.

Step 3: Add segment conditions

Under Conditions, choose between:

User fields

Use customer profile, purchase, location, and app usage information.

Available conditions include:

  • Customer tags

  • Language

  • Last order date

  • Last session date

  • Location City

  • Location Country

  • Location Postal code

  • Location State/Province

  • Logged in

  • Operating system

  • Total orders

  • Total spend in the app

  • Total spend across all channels

  • New user

  • Has purchased before

  • Has not purchased before

  • Clicked a notification before

  • Last login

Activity fields

Use actions customers performed in the app.

Available conditions include:

  • Added to cart

  • Added to wishlist

  • Viewed collection

  • Viewed product

Step 4: Configure each condition

After selecting a field:

  1. Choose the comparison rule, such as Equals, After, or another available option.

  2. Enter or select the required value.

  3. Review the condition in the Detail panel.

The available comparison rules depend on the selected field.

For example:

  • Location Postal code → Equals → 10001

  • Last session date → Before → Selected date

  • Total orders → Greater than → 2

Step 5: Add more conditions

Click Add more to include another condition.

Conditions are connected using AND when All conditions is selected. This means users must meet every condition in the segment.

Use the Delete action to remove a condition that is no longer needed.

Avoid adding too many conditions unless they are necessary. A highly restrictive segment may contain very few eligible users.

Step 6: Review and save

Use the Detail panel to review:

  • Segment name

  • Matching rule

  • Selected fields

  • Comparison rules

  • Entered values

When everything is correct, click Save.

Use a segment in notifications

After saving the segment, you can select it when creating a notification.

Manual Notification

The selected segment defines the audience for that one-time campaign.

For example, you can send a promotion only to inactive users or customers in a selected country.

Automated Notification

The selected segment limits which users are eligible to receive the automation.

A user must meet both:

  • The automated notification trigger

  • The selected segment conditions

The user must also have installed the app and allowed push notifications.

Recommended practices

  • Give every segment a clear and descriptive name.

  • Use All conditions when every rule is required.

  • Use Any condition when one matching rule is enough.

  • Keep conditions relevant to the notification goal.

  • Review date-based segments regularly.

  • Avoid creating multiple segments with nearly identical conditions.

  • Confirm the selected segment before sending a notification.

Troubleshooting

The segment contains fewer users than expected

Review whether All conditions is selected. Users must meet every condition when this option is used.

The segment contains too many users

Add another relevant condition or use a more specific comparison value.

A condition does not return the expected users

Check the selected field, comparison rule, and entered value.

The segment does not appear in a notification

Confirm that the segment was saved successfully, then refresh the notification editor.

Some segment users do not receive the notification

Users must also have the app installed and allow push notification permission. Automated notifications may require additional trigger conditions.
