Buy X Get Y & BOGO
Product-triggered rewards: setup, the multiply formula, and practical examples.
What is BXGY/BOGO campaign?
A BXGY (Buy X Get Y) or BOGO (Buy One Get One) campaign rewards customers with a free or discounted product when they purchase specific qualifying products.
Unlike Cart Value or Cart Quantity campaigns, BXGY campaigns are based on which products customers buy, rather than the total cart value or number of items.
A BXGY/BOGO campaign has two parts:
Buy (X): The products customers must purchase to qualify.
Get (Y): The product(s) customers receive as the reward.
You can configure:
Which products or collections qualify as the Buy products.
Which products are offered as the Gift.
The required purchase quantity.
The gift quantity customers receive.
Example 1: Buy One Get One Free (BOGO)
Buy 1 T-Shirt
Get 1 T-Shirt for free
Example 2: Buy X Get Y
Buy 2 Coffee Bags
Get 1 Coffee Mug for free
Notes
For BOGO campaign, the gifts are automatically configured to be the exact same products with the products chosen to trigger the offer.
Campaign setting
Creating a BXGY/BOGO offer consists of 5 fundamental parts:
Basic information
Customer buys (main condition, sub-condition)
Customer gets
Works with other offers
Advanced settings (optional)
1. Basic information
1.1. Offer title
The offer name is for internal management only and won’t be visible to customers.
1.2. Start date/End date
Start time: The time that the offer starts working.
End time (optional): The time that the offer stops working.

2. Customer buys
2.1. Select the products that will trigger the offer
This controls which items move the customer toward the reward.
Each product quantity and variant can be adjusted according to your preferred conditions.
2.2. Add sub-conditions
Sub-conditions are optional to set up. Sub conditions can be combined together to target more specific customers.

Condition | What it checks |
|---|---|
New customer | First-time vs. returning buyers. |
Customer's order history | Total spent overall, spent on the last order, or number of orders placed. Also lets you limit the number of uses per customer. |
Customer location | Selected countries — or exclude customers from selected locations. |
Customer tags | Match Shopify customer tags; can exclude by tag, and treat logged-out visitors as having no tags. |
Customer's status | Logged in / logged out. |
Product price | Only items above/below a price qualify. |
Subscription products | Only subscription or only one-time purchases. |
Specific link address | The offer activates only for visitors arriving via a special shareable link (e.g. |
Markets | Selected Shopify Markets. |
Note: Some sub-conditions rely on Shopify customer data and can only be evaluated when the customer is logged in. These sub conditions include New customer, Customer's order history, Customer tags.
If the customer is not logged in, these conditions may not be applied.
3. Customer gets
For BXGY Campaign:
Select the gifts you would like to offer as well as the quantity and discounts for them.
You can select multiple products to offer as gifts in this section and set up the quantity limit for each variant.

For BOGO campaign:
Gifts automatically configured to be the exact same products with the products chosen in the "Customer buys" section. The quantity of the gifts can be adjusted.
Please note: Specifically for BOGO campaign, if you select multiple products in the "Customer buys" section -> Each selected product is evaluated individually, not as a combined requirement.
This means customers do not need to purchase every selected product to receive the corresponding gift.
Example
If you select:
Customer Buys: Product A, Product B
Customer Gets: Product A, Product B
Then:
Customer buys Product A → Receives the gift for Product A.
Customer buys Product B → Receives the gift for Product B.
Customer buys both Product A and Product B → Receives both gifts.
In other words, each qualifying product triggers its corresponding gift independently.
In the "Config discount", give your discount a name. This name is displayed as a discount tag when your discount is applied to a product in cart.
After that, input the discount value. There are 2 discount types:
Percentage: The price of your gift will be discounted by a percentage of its original price. 100% means free gift.
Fixed: Set a fixed price for your gifts.

Ego Free Gift discount should work seamlessly with other Shopify discounts under the Shopify discount rules. It is configured to automatically combine with product, order, and shipping discounts If you have other Shopify discounts running, please make sure they are configured to be combinable.
4. Works with other offers
Under Works with other offers, two controls decide the outcome:
Priority — a number. Assign a priority level to this offer to determine the order in which offers are applied. A lower number indicates a higher priority (for example, 1 takes precedence over 2 or 3). This setting is used when a customer qualifies for multiple offers at the same time. Give your most important offer priority 1.
Stop on Match — "Apply this campaign only and skip others if matched." When the campaign fires, no lower-priority campaign runs.
Example:
Campaign A (Priority 1): Buy $500 get free gift A
Campaign B (Priority 2): Buy 3 products get free gift B
Stop on Match is true -> If customer achieve $500 cart value, they will receive free gift A no matter whether they have more or less than 3 products in cart.
5. Advanced settings
Multiply formula: Enable this option to allow the gift quantity to increase as customers purchase more qualifying items.
When enabled, the Get (Y) quantity is multiplied based on how many times the customer meets the Buy (X) requirement.
Works in reverse: removes gift items automatically when the customer no longer qualifies — e.g. they remove products and fall below the threshold.
We recommend keeping this on for every campaign. Without it, a shopper can qualify, receive the gift, empty the rest of the cart, and check out with only the free item.
Display setting
1. Offer claim behavior
Mode | What the customer experiences | Use when |
|---|---|---|
Automatically add products to cart | The moment they qualify, all gift items appear in the cart at the discounted price, with a notification toast. | The gift has no variants (one tote bag, one sample sachet). Zero friction. |
Give customers a choice of products to add | A "Congratulations!" pop-up opens on the cart page and they pick their gift — including the variant (size, color). | Gifts with variants, or when choosing between several gifts is part of the fun. |
In choice mode you can also limit the total gifts added — e.g. the customer qualifies for 3 gift options but may add only 1.
2. Offer exposure
2.1. Announcement bar
Show a store-wide banner promoting the offer. Configure the following:
Where: every page, home, product, or cart pages; device — desktop & mobile, only desktop, or only mobile.
Type: simple bar, whole bar clickable, or bar with a link/button (set the URL, button label, button-vs-link style, open in new tab).
Position: top or bottom of the screen; sticky or scrolls away; optional close icon.
Countdown timer: fixed duration in minutes (restarts per visitor) or a specific end date. When it runs out choose: Restart, Hide announcement bar, Show custom title (e.g. "Offer ended — see what's next"), or Do nothing.

2.2. Product page widget
Show a banner on the product page and promote your offers. Set up a title and a subtitle to indicate what the offer is and how much left customers need to spend to get the gift dynamically.

2.3. Promotion badge
Catch shopper's attention with special offer badges on product images. You can edit the badge content and choose whether the badge is displayed on every page or a specific page (homepage, product page, collection page).
