Targeting Rules
Every targeting condition explained, with recipes for the common setups.
Customer targeting
Target by who the customer is:
- All customers — no restriction (default).
- New customer / Return customer — first-time vs. repeat buyers.
- Customer tags — match Shopify customer tags (e.g.
vip,wholesale). - Order count — equals / more than / less than N orders.
- Customer total spent — equals / more than / less than an amount.
- Segments — match your Shopify customer segments.
Product targeting
Show the survey only in the context of specific catalog items — by product, variant, collection, product tag, or product type. Exit-intent adds the cart condition: has product in cart / has empty cart.
Behavior targeting
- Has visited pages — URL equals / contains / starts with / ends with a value, N times. E.g. only survey visitors who saw the pricing page.
- Number & frequency of site visits — e.g. at least 3 visits within the last 7 days. Time spans: any time, 6 or 12 hours, 1, 2, 3, 7, 14, or 30 days. Targets engaged repeat visitors.
- Page views in current session — equals / more than / less than N pages this session. E.g. only ask visitors who browsed 5+ pages — they know your store.
Device, login state & location
Restrict by device type (All / Desktop / Mobile), login state (all / logged in / not logged in), and country or state.
Combining rules — and testing them
Rules combine with AND (all must match) or OR (any may match). Example recipes:
- Return customer AND Product pages AND Desktop → repeat buyers researching products on desktop.
- New customer OR fewer than 2 orders → everyone still early in their journey.
Two habits that save headaches: (1) Start broad and narrow later — over-targeting is the #1 reason a survey "never shows up". (2) Test targeted surveys in an incognito window — as a logged-in repeat visitor, you often don't match your own rules.
