Question Types Reference

Every question type, its options, and which to pick for each job.

Picking the right type

The question picker groups content into five families. Rule of thumb: closed questions (choice, rating) get more answers and chart automatically; open text gets richer insight but fewer responses. Lead with closed questions, end with one optional open question.

Choice questions

TypeBest for
Single ChoicePick exactly one option — attribution, preferences. The workhorse.
Multiple ChoicePick several options ("Which features do you use?").
Binary ChoiceSimple Yes/No decisions.
DropdownLong option lists (countries, 10+ choices) without cluttering the widget.
Button ListOptions as tappable buttons; layouts: Vertical, 2 Columns, 3 Columns. Great on mobile.
Image ChoiceVisual options with images (pick a style, a colorway); same layout options.
ConsentExplicit opt-in (marketing consent, terms).
Like/DislikeThumbs-up / thumbs-down verdicts per item.

Rating & Ranking

TypeScale & options
NPS0–10 "how likely are you to recommend us". Analytics show the full score distribution and average. Add a follow-up "why?" via branching logic for low scores.
Star Rating1–5 stars by default; optional labels for the left / center / right of the scale ("Poor" … "Excellent").
Ranked ChoiceCustomers order options by preference; analytics show each option's average rank.
SliderNumeric slider, 1–100 by default, with configurable min, max, step increments (default 5), and starting position (left / center / right).

Contact Info

Email, Phone Number (with an optional country-code selector), Address, and Website collect structured contact details. Use Email together with the Promo Code question to trade a discount for a subscriber (see Reward Customers with Discount Codes).

Text questions

Single-line Answer and Multi-line Answer collect free text — set a placeholder and a max-character limit. Number accepts numeric input only. Date shows a date picker with a configurable format (default DD/MM/YYYY) and optional minimum/maximum dates.

Special pages

  • Welcome Screen — an intro page before the first question; use it on longer link/email surveys to set expectations ("2 minutes, 5 questions").
  • Statement — a text-only page for context or instructions, no answer required.
  • Promo Code — shows a discount code as a reward; see Reward Customers with Discount Codes.
  • Thank You — the closing screen after submission.
  • Redirect To URL — ends the survey by sending the customer to any URL (a collection page, a review platform…).
  • End Screen — a final screen variant to close the survey.
